Antique Portraits: The Collodion Process and Leaded Frames

Catherine Segura and Kristin Wu

Wet Plate Portrait & Leaded Frame Workshop
A two-day workshop with Catherine Segura and Kristin Wu

Step back to the 1850s and make a portrait the way it was done then. This workshop is a hands-on look at the wet plate collodion process, one of the earliest photographic techniques, using the same old-world methods and materials, including silver nitrate, that photographers relied on more than 150 years ago.

Catherine Segura, a San Diego photographer who specializes in tintypes and wet plate, will take us through the history and evolution of photography. You’ll learn to make emulsion, prep glass plates, compose an image. Katherine will individually show you how to process your image.

You’ll take two images on glass. Since this is a stained glass hybrid, on day two Kristin will teach leaded came construction, where we build a frame for your portrait. Your second image is yours to keep, display, or use in another project.

This is a live model session so please have something or someone to photograph in mind. We recommend coordinating ahead of time with a loved ones for a family portrait, have someone bring your pet, or sit for your own. Bring mementos to stage a still life etc.
